Our collaboration with Definitive Technology goes back to 1993, after its founding in Baltimore MD. Today the entire loudspeaker product line bears our industrial design imprint. We have had the good fortune to work alongside a world class engineering team and a focused, articulate marketing group - delivering products that are the best-selling premium home loudspeakers in the USA. Definitive speakers are consistent winners of the prestigious CES Innovations Awards, with eight citations as of 2010.

Iomega, leader in innovative storage and network security solutions partnered with Celestica for new development initiatives with their Portable Drive and Network Storage products. We were assigned the task of developing concepts that would respond to a set of demanding marketing and manufacturing challenges. The concepts shown, though highly valid from an appearance point-of-view, didn’t make the development cut. Others did.

The Modular Combat Helmet is a proof-of-concept for a longer-range military development project. The helmet shown is the inner layer of a two-layer design; the outer layer providing ballistic protection. We were tasked with integrating crash helmet level protection with a new state-of-the-art liner system, and military-standard communications components. We developed the helmet design and CAD geometry that produced the basic FDM prototype shells. All final detailing was completed by hand in our workshop.

Co-developed by USTec and Canon Research France, TecStream integrates and unifies control of home entertainment systems. The controller acts as a sophisticated set-top box, managing cable and responding to wireless commands. Our design work, from concept through mechanical design definition, focused on housing the electronics in a low, sinuous, aerodynamic form well matched to today’s cutting edge A/V equipment.

The SpotCell 2500Xe is a high-performance antenna system that boosts wireless signals and ensures reliable indoor coverage for cell phones, PDAs and 3G laptop air cards. Our design task was typical of the challenge presented in “productizing” a new, disruptive technology. These antenna housings, while providing new functionality, required a crisp yet unobtrusive appearance that at the same time delivered a differentiated brand image. It appears we were successful.

With the acquisition of test and measurement equipment manufacturer Acterna in 2005, JDS Uniphase initiated new product development that integrated JDS and Acterna’s technologies. We worked on the new Multiple Application Platform product line, providing ID both for the portable benchtop MAP 200 shown, and the mainframe configurations.

We designed this series of consumer power bars on a contract with Woods Canada, a manufacturer of electrical products. Our objective was to create a surge-protected array of power and data points that satisfy requirements for easy, safe connection, cable management, and clean but unobtrusive appearance. Sold under the popular NOMA brand through Canadian Tire stores, the power bars have been very successful with consumers, gaining high ratings for utility, reliability, … and good looks!

Coinciding with a portfolio-wide rebranding initiative, the CN 5430 is Ciena’s flagship product, carrying the new appearance of an emerging optical network leader. We worked with Ciena engineering and marketing groups to provide ID from detail and construction of physical user interface components - doors, covers, vent panels, through to human factors solutions for circuit card latches and status displays.
