Our collaboration with Definitive Technology goes back to 1993, after its founding in Baltimore MD. Today the entire loudspeaker product line bears our industrial design imprint. We have had the good fortune to work alongside a world class engineering team and a focused, articulate marketing group - delivering products that are the best-selling premium home loudspeakers in the USA. Definitive speakers are consistent winners of the prestigious CES Innovations Awards, with eight citations as of 2010.
Co-developed by USTec and Canon Research France, TecStream integrates and unifies control of home entertainment systems. The controller acts as a sophisticated set-top box, managing cable and responding to wireless commands. Our design work, from concept through mechanical design definition, focused on housing the electronics in a low, sinuous, aerodynamic form well matched to today’s cutting edge A/V equipment.
With the acquisition of test and measurement equipment manufacturer Acterna in 2005, JDS Uniphase initiated new product development that integrated JDS and Acterna’s technologies. We worked on the new Multiple Application Platform product line, providing ID both for the portable benchtop MAP 200 shown, and the mainframe configurations.
We designed this series of consumer power bars on a contract with Woods Canada, a manufacturer of electrical products. Our objective was to create a surge-protected array of power and data points that satisfy requirements for easy, safe connection, cable management, and clean but unobtrusive appearance. Sold under the popular NOMA brand through Canadian Tire stores, the power bars have been very successful with consumers, gaining high ratings for utility, reliability, … and good looks!
Ciena’s 5400 family is the industry’s first fully modular and reconfigurable optical switching platform. Coinciding with a portfolio-wide rebranding initiative, the CN 5430 is Ciena’s flagship product, carrying the new appearance of an emerging optical network leader. We worked with Ciena engineering and marketing groups to provide ID from detail and construction of physical user interface components - doors, covers, vent panels, through to human factors solutions for circuit card latches and status displays.
Sequel Technologies provides products to the residential and commercial security markets. The ST Express is Sequel’s flagship product, entirely developed in-house. We were the ID and mechanical design part of the team, leading development from concept through detailed manufacturing design of all plastic and metal components. Working with participants in Canada, USA, India and China, we built skills that continue to serve us well as global development partners.
Equitrac is a leading provider of enterprise print management solutions. The TouchPoint terminal is the contact point where users of print reproduction services input their requirements to Equitrac software. We delivered industrial design and mechanical development on a team comprising members from Equitrac, Celestica EMS Toronto, and Celestica Singapore. Welcomed by users and facility management, TouchPoint won a BERTL award in 2007, its introduction year.
Part of an ongoing Future Scenario research project, Decade Radio envisages a product that draws from a number of emerging internet and WiFi technologies. It will be able to generate programs just like a traditional radio, but will respond to personal music preference instead of the broad demographic targets of broadcast media. High quality audio, touch-screen interface, and cutting edge design drive the marketing proposition.

From 2004 through 2007 Gennum leveraged its world-class hearing aid technology to enter the bluetooth headset market. We worked with Gennum as industrial designers and mechanical designers over that period, delivering three headset models - the Zen, nXZEN, and the nX 6000. The nX 6000, building on a fast technological learning curve within Gennum, achieved an “Excellent” rating from CNET, as well as an Industrial Design citation from the Frankfurt-based IF Awards organization.
Hotel Communications Network (HCN) provides in-room guest-focused information via touch-screen video and voice technology. Beginning with the Hilton and Hyatt hotels in Chicago, HCN is deploying its system to major centers throughout the USA. Our design work extended from initial concept through full engineering CAD and offshore manufacturing support on both the telephone and display unit.
PS Audio, a high-performance audio/video component manufacturer, commissioned us with ID work for their new PerfectWave series CD Transport and DAC products. Along with providing visual refinements to their preliminary mechanical layouts, we projected future product directions with a series of visual concepts based on current PS Audio manufacturing methods. Power and data cables, a significant part of PS Audio’s business, carry our design imprint as well.
This consumer lighting system capitalizes on the use and installation advantages offered by low-voltage power. In partnership with a small entrepreneurial company and an offshore contract manufacturer, we developed a system that installs quickly, without requiring tools or electrical expertise. We were responsible for industrial design, mechanical design, technology integration, and manufacturing liaison. Connexx is sold in home DIY stores throughout the USA.
